Coffee Carafes

How to Clean Your Coffee Carafe

There are a number of different ways to properly clean and care for your carafe. When cleaning coffee carafes, it is important to use caution. You never want to use abrasive pads, brushes, cleaners or any metal products on or inside of the glass carafe. Also, exposing a non-Medelco quality carafe to one extreme temperature then to another, (for example pouring out hot coffee then immediately rinsing the carafe in ice water) can damage the carafe, even break the glass. Medelco carafes, on the other hand, are made of heat resistant Schott Duran glass from Germany. They can withstand high temperature variations from cold to hot temperatures, so this is not as much of a concern.

Rinse it after every use.

Don’t let old coffee sit in the pot long enough to create a ring inside the carafe. Rinse it out with warm water or water and a mild soap shortly after brewing. This will help prevent residue from collecting in the first place!

Use white vinegar and baking soda.

Despite the taste, vinegar is an effective cleaning agent for food processors, dishwashers and coffee machines because it is safe for consumption. The following steps walk you through a process that allows you to clean your carafe and coffee maker at the same time:

  1. Fill the carafe with warm water and 1/3 cup of white vinegar.
  2. Pour the mixed water and vinegar solution into the coffee maker. Run the machine as if it has coffee in it, allowing the hot mixture to drip into the carafe
  3. Run the coffee maker two more times with water to rid any vinegar taste.
  4. Put a teaspoon of baking soda in the carafe with warm water and allow it to sit. Then rinse the carafe with water multiple times to remove any vinegar taste.

Use our specially scented cleaners.

Instead of using vinegar, use one of our Universal Cleaners. These solutions are specially designed to remove reside and stains from auto drip coffee machines, carafes, tea kettles, percolators, stainless steel, and plastic & ceramic travel mugs. Choose from Hazelnut Scented Coffeemaker Cleaner or if you are not a fan of flavored coffee, try our French Roast Scented Coffeemaker Cleaner. Follow the directions on the Scented Coffee Maker Cleaner labels to properly clean your carafe.
